Tanner Oman
Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) — Rapid City, SD
Tanner is the founder of Midwest Money Mentor, LLC, based in Rapid City, South Dakota. He created FundWise specifically to bring financial wellness education to small businesses in the Black Hills and across South Dakota — businesses that typically have no access to structured financial education for their employees.
The AFC® (Accredited Financial Counselor) designation is awarded by the Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education (AFCPE) and accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). It requires passing a rigorous certification exam, completing education requirements, and maintaining continuing education. Tanner is not a salesperson, not an investment advisor, and not a broker. He's a financial educator — and that distinction matters.

What is an AFC®?

The Accredited Financial Counselor® designation is one of the most rigorous financial counseling credentials available. It's not a weekend certification, a self-proclaimed title, or a license to sell investment products. It's a credential with real standards, real accountability, and a defined scope of practice.

NCCA Accredited
The AFC® credential is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) — the same body that accredits other recognized professional certifications in counseling, coaching, and education.
Rigorous Exam + Education
AFC® certification requires passing a comprehensive exam covering consumer credit, budgeting, financial planning fundamentals, and counseling methodology. Continuing education is required to maintain the credential.
Education-Focused Scope
AFCs specialize in financial education and counseling — not investment management, not insurance sales, not tax advice. The scope is clear: build financial literacy and capability, not manage assets.
Employer & Group Expertise
While many AFCs work with individuals, Tanner specializes specifically in workplace financial wellness — group sessions, employer partnerships, and curriculum delivery for teams of 5–50 employees.

How Tanner Works with Employers

FundWise is designed to be low-friction for employers. Tanner handles the curriculum, the delivery, and the follow-up materials. Your job is to give your team the time to show up.

1
Discovery call — no sales pitch
Tanner learns about your team, your benefits package, and your goals. If FundWise is the right fit, he'll put together a custom proposal within 24 hours. If not, he'll tell you honestly.
2
Group sessions — your choice of format
Sessions run in-person (Black Hills area) or over live Zoom (statewide). Quarterly (4 sessions/year) or monthly (12 sessions/year). Every employee is included — flat annual fee, no per-head costs.
3
6-module curriculum, live delivery
Benefits literacy, budgeting, debt management, savings fundamentals, financial stress, and family financial planning. Each session is responsive to the specific questions your team brings — not a canned script.
4
Follow-up resources + optional 1-on-1 coaching
Employees who can't attend live get the recording and async resources. Optional 1-on-1 coaching add-on available for employees who want private, individualized support.

Why the AFC® Credential Matters for Your Team

Anyone can call themselves a "financial coach." The internet is full of them — YouTube course creators, side-hustle monetizers, app founders with no credentials. Your employees deserve someone with a real, accredited credential and a defined scope of practice that keeps them out of sales territory.

The AFC® isn't just a badge. It's a scope of practice. It means Tanner is legally and professionally accountable for staying within the bounds of financial education — not investment advice, not insurance, not tax counsel. That accountability is the point.

What you're NOT getting — and why that matters

FundWise sessions are not investment advice. Tanner will not recommend specific stocks, funds, or financial products. He will not sell insurance, annuities, or any other financial product. He will not provide tax advice or legal guidance.

What he will do: teach your employees how to read their pay stubs, use their HSA, capture their 401(k) match, budget on variable income, tackle debt systematically, and build emergency savings. That's worth a lot — and it's completely free of conflicts of interest.
